Berlin

When we arrived in Berlin we didn't do the usual which would be to drop our stuff off and go to check out some sights as in Berlin there aren't really any! It's pretty much just concrete, with the noticeable TV tower sticking up in the middle and a couple of other things which may be of interest but nothing like any of the places we have previously visited.

We decided to chill out in the hostel bar and then find somewhere to party later as we did not need to get up early the next day. After chatting to a few people in the hostel who were up for going to find some good clubs in the city we set off armed with a map and some recommendations for some places to check out.

The first place called 8mm was in fact not a club but a small bar which we walked past about 4 times trying to find. This was not what we were looking for so went to the next place on our list called the King Kong club which sounded like it would be good fun......nope wrong again, this was also more like a bar with a rubbish DJ and to add insult to injury we even had to pay 1 euro for the pleasure.

After swiftly finishing off our drinks we went to our third and final location to a club called Icon, which did exist and it was a club but according to the two big bouncers standing outside this little door down a dark alley where all the buildings looked derelict it was apparently closed. Why bouncers were stood outside a closed club I have no idea, I can only assume they didn't like the look of us...so that was it three failures in a row, we couldn't find anywhere to go in Berlin!! I was under the impression this place was party central.

After feeling beaten we jumped in a taxi and headed back near to our hostel as there were a couple of places there, not that they were the kind of thing we were looking for but at this point we weren't too picky! We did end up in a place just across the road from our hostel which adequate for our needs, but we were still less than satisfied by our night out in Berlin!!

The following day was a late start and by the time we had had something to eat it was about 3.30pm and we still hadn't seen anything off Berlin, not that there was much to see anyway. The only thing we could see from any location in Berlin was the TV Tower so thought this would be a good starting point and we would be able to have a good view over the city. The queue to go up the tower was absolutely ridiculous it seriously took us at least an hour until we made it to the front and up the lift to the top. The view was cool, and we had a wander about the top and then had to queue up again to go back down haha.

We then walked about an hour to get the the gate, which wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be but it was about the only other thing I wanted to see in Berlin.

Stupidly we had a few beers back at the hostel and thought it would be a good idea to go out again to give Berlin another shot. We went to get dinner at a restaurant called White Trash which was awesome and had some really bizarre things playing on the TVs as well as other obscure things dotted around the place. It was really a burger joint so that's what I went for which also came with the excellently titled "Fuck U Fries" so it was a no brainer for me!

The club we ended up at was a hell of a lot better than any other the places we had been and it turned out to be a really good night, the morning on the other had was horrible as we had to get up early to catch our train and I felt terrible. I managed to eat some food which made me feel temporarily better but I'm still feeling a bit fragile.....I think (hope) it will be a quiet night tonight.

Hi Kevin,
Got home last night - had a great time - sun was hot - pool was cool!
Caught up with your travels this morning - I see a certain style coming through here - sightsee - beer - food - beer - sightsee - beer. A cultural tour of the bars of europe! you could make a fortune if you wrote the backpackers guide to the best bars in europe :-) anyway - glad to know that you are both OK ( hope you are not feeling fragile now) and enjoying the trip. look forward to the next episode in the ongoing soap opera " Kevin and Matt hit the bars of Venice"!!! Take care - have fun - Dad x

Hi Kev, really enjoying reading about your adventures, at least it came out ok in the end in Berlin. Venice should be good and if you get away from St Marks Square and the Rialto bridge you should get some decent prices on food. Love Mum xx

Wow, I bet you were both been making good use of the toilets in Berlin. I don't suppose you managed to get any photos? I did manage to find a map of the sewers in Berlin:

They were so far ahead of us, makes you wonder how they lost the war.

Yea I've made a point of trying to have different food and beer everyday!

In Venice now which is really nice once you get out of the tourist hot spots.

I'm using my iPod at the mo, so will update my blog with photos and stuff when I find a computer - I'm currently in the middle of a busy street where I found an insecure hotspot to access!

byeeeeeee x
